FOOD & CHARITY

Several local stars braved Sunday's rains to attend the General Food Supermarket launch, which doubled as a platform to bring awareness to its charitable efforts within the neighbouring Liguanea communities.

"We are quite pleased at the results and today's turnout," said General Food Supermarket owner June Wong on Sunday.

"The support was overwhelming, and to think all of this is for charity: the children of these communities are at the heart of this effort," she added.

The charity event, which commenced around 11:00 am in the parking lot of Liguanea Plaza, saw dancehall artistes volunteering as staff for the day, packing grocery bags, manning cash registers and unloading trolleys inside shoppers' vehicles.

For dancehall artiste-cum-designer Tami Chynn it's all a part of doing her bit for her fans.

"It gives us a chance to interact with people, some of whom would not have access to us," she told Thursday Life, noting, too, that as a child she sometimes played supermarket with her siblings and would always call first dibs on being the cashier.

"Yes, and now I really get to be one for the day."

Her husband and fellow artiste Wayne Marshall wasn't too far behind, as he was packing plastic bags behind the checkout counter.

Shoppers were encouraged to purchase special low-budget food packages or donate their change, while they all had the opportunity to mingle with their favourite stars.

"I'm so grateful to be a part of the General Food initiative; it means a lot to help make a difference in so many lives," said singer Alaine Laughton. "Today is awesome and let's keep giving."

Entertainers aside, the day's activities included live performances from Dwight Richards and Friends, as well as several booths occupied by representatives of popular food brands which issued snacks, refreshments and other items.

The General Food Supermarket charity is part of the store's ongoing effort to contribute to the social welfare of the neighbourhood in which it operates.
